While the game may not have been included in that lineup, nor did the 2003 release of MOTHER 1+2 make its way overseas, the community remained hopeful that perhaps the game would finally be released as a Virtual Console title on the Nintendo Wii. Interest in an official release for MOTHER didn’t fade away either, with talk of interest rising anew when the classic NES lineup of titles were being released on the Game Boy Advance. However, the effort led the way to many other MOTHER petitions, using Nintendo’s silence as motivation to try harder rather than giving up. Unfortunately, they were met with the cold shoulder. A copy of this prototype was later found and circulated on the Internet under the informal title EarthBound Zero. A North American version of the game was localized into English, but was abandoned as commercially nonviable. Though Miyamoto rejected the proposal at first, he eventually gave Itoi a development team. Writer and director Shigesato Itoi pitched Mother's concept to Shigeru Miyamoto while visiting Nintendo's headquarters for other business. The game uses random encounters to enter a menu-based, first-person perspective battle system. Mother follows the young Ninten as he uses his great-grandfather's studies on psychic powers to fight hostile, formerly inanimate objects and other enemies.

Mother, officially known outside of Japan as EarthBound Beginnings, is an RPG developed by Ape and Pax Softnica and published by Nintendo for the Famicom in 1989.
